Christchurch boy fighting for life

A 5-year-old boy is fighting for his life in Christchurch Hospital tonight after he suffered serious head injuries this afternoon, police say.

An ambulance was called to the child's home in the Christchurch suburb of Papanui at 1.30pm, and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said police were investigating.

"The ongoing investigation has so far determined that the boy attended school this morning before returning home, as normal, at around midday."

Detectives have spoken to the boy's family, school staff and people who were in contact with him after he arrived home from school.

"The police investigation is focussed on the events throughout the day," Mr Anderson said.

He said Canterbury police were working with the family while they supported the child in Christchurch Hospital tonight.
