Old Christchurch police station demolished

An old police station in Christchurch has been imploded at 5pm this evening.

It is believed the former Christchurch police station, which is owned by Ngai Tahu Justice Holdings, has been demolished by Ceres New Zealand because of damage it sustained after the Christchurch earthquake.

A soft demolition implosion was carried out on the building.

The interior of the building was completely striped out to expose structural elements and asbestos was removed prior to the implosion.

About 100kg of Orica NZ Senatel magnum explosive cartridges were used, with 225 non-electric detonators and 2000 metres of detonating cord.

A 100 meter exclusion zone was created surrounding the building to accommodate for falling debris generated by the explosion.

Roads which have been closed off around the area are expected to be cleared and opened for traffic by 6.30pm.
