The death of a Taranaki toddler is under investigation by police.
The 2-year-old girl was from Hawera.
A 27-year-old man from the South Taranaki town has been charged with assault in relation to the death and is in custody, police confirmed.
The man is due to appear in the Hawera District Court tomorrow.
Police inquiries are ongoing and further charges against the man are likely.
The girl died on Friday at a Hawera residential property, which emergency services were called to about 11pm. They were unable to revive her, police said.
The family has been provided with victim support and are assisting police
The coroner has been notified and a post mortem was completed over the weekend.
Police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the death.
