Police assaulted in Christchurch

Two police officers were assaulted in Christchurch last night, suffering head injuries as they tried to make an arrest.

The officers were arresting a suspect in a domestic violence incident at about 9pm when they were injured.

The arrest was made at the Palms Shopping Centre car park in Shirley, after the suspect fled the North New Brighton address where the domestic incident had occurred.

A 29-year-old male is facing a number of charges relating to the domestic incident, as well as a charge relating to injuring the officers.

The two officers were treated by medical staff, but do not require ongoing medical assistance.

The victim of the domestic incident was not injured.
