Suppression for child porn accused

A professional man accused of accessing child pornography has been granted interim name suppression after his lawyer argued that publication of his name would result in "hardship".

The 60-year-old faces 28 allegations of possessing objectionable material featuring young boys and girls, many in early to mid-teens, while overseas in 2013.

He received a registrar's remand without having to appear at the Christchurch District Court today.

The Canterbury man was bailed to reappear on July 23 when he is expected to enter pleas to the charges.

Defence lawyer Grant Tyrrell applied for interim name suppression on the basis of hardship.

Judge Stephen O'Driscoll granted the order, while also suppressing his occupation to avoid "speculation" of who he might be.

Mr Tyrrell was asked to file further submissions in support of name suppression if he wanted his client's identity kept secret beyond July 23.
