Baby dies with unexplained injuries

Christchurch Police are investigating the death of a 15-month-old child in the city last night.

Police and St John were called to an address in Papanui last night around 10:30pm, where a one-year-old boy was found unconscious with unexplained injuries.

The baby was transported to the Accident and Emergency Department at Christchurch Hospital and died shortly after arriving.

Police continue to comb the scene which, they say, could take days.

"The forensic scene examination of the residential property continues and is expected to take three to four days to complete," a police statement said.

Police have spoken to the two adult occupants living at the address and are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination this afternoon in order to establish the full extent of the injuries and an indication of how the injuries occurred.

"The dedicated investigative team will continue to work tirelessly to ascertain how the baby was injured," Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Ford said.
