Woman killed in Waikato crash named

The name of a motorist who died after a crash between her car and a truck and trailer unit in the Waikato has been named by police.

She was Belia Maria Van Rensburg (63), of Leamington near Cambridge.

Waikato Road Policing Manager Inspector Freda Grace said the crash involving Mrs Van Rensburg's vehicle occurred outside the Avantidrome on SH1 about 3pm on Thursday.

It was still too soon to confirm how the crash happened.

"At this point in time police would like to extend our sympathies to Mrs Van Rensburg's family and highlight the need for all motorists to drive to the conditions and drive to survive, particularly over the winter."

Mrs Grace reminded motorists to drive with their headlights on, have their car serviced regularly and ensure both the vehicle and driver were fit for the road.

"That means your tyres have plenty of tread, both your headlights are working, you're not driving tired or impaired by drugs, alcohol or using your cell phone and you're doing everything in your power to ensure Waikato roads are a safe, social environment.

"After all, road safety is no accident and if we are to prevent trauma on our roads we need to do so as a Waikato community."
