A man is believed to have doused himself in petrol and tried to set himself on fire at an electorate office in South Auckland.
The office is understood to have been that of Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, a National party list MP for Manukau East, which is on Kolmar Rd, Papatoetoe.
A spokesman at the Papatoetoe office said no staff had been injured, but he would not comment further.
A Counties Manukau police spokeswoman has confirmed a male student threatened to harm himself at an address in South Auckland.
She said he had since been taken to Middlemore Hospital's mental health unit.
Fire shift manager Steve Smith said they managed to get the man out safely.
"He doused himself in petrol and was obviously making some sort of allegations," he said.
Mr Bakshi's executive assistant said she did not think the MP was in his office at the time of the incident.
