Corrections defending transgender stance

The Department of Corrections is defending its position on transgender prisoners, as an advocate group threatens a hunger strike.

No Pride in Prisons will begin the strike tomorrow if transwoman Jade Follett is not removed from Rimutaka Men's Prison, despite asking to be shifted for months.

However, Rimutaka Prison director Chris Burns said the it only received the request at the weekend, and it is being treated with urgency.

Corrections allows anyone to apply for a transfer if they identify with a different gender.

If their application fails, they are accommodated to the sex recorded on their birth certificate.
