Man bashed in Matamata home invasion

A man was seriously assaulted during a home invasion in Matamata early this morning.

Police are now carrying out a scene examination at the Sylvan St address.

They were called just before 2am and found the man in his home with severe facial injuries.

"A witness at the address told police he saw a car pull up the drive of the property and a number of people get out and then heard the sound of breaking glass and the male occupant of the house yelling," said Senior Sergeant Andrew Townsend.

"Going to investigate, the witness found the victim in the kitchen bleeding heavily from facial wounds and that the offenders had fled."

Mr Townsend said while there had been reports a firearm had been present during the attack no shots were fired and no firearm was recovered."

"The victim was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance where he is currently being treated."

The property was secured overnight and a scene examination is set to commence this morning.
