Man found dead in Waikato River named

Foul play was not to blame for the death of a man whose body was found in the Waikato River yesterday morning, police say.

Police today named the dead man as Phillip Mark Morris (38), of Hamilton.

His body was identified using forensic evidence after it was recovered from the river near Comries Ave yesterday.

A post-mortem examination gave no indication of suspicious circumstances in relation to his death, police said.

Detective Paul Van der Zee of Hamilton CIB said police had expressed their condolences Mr Morris' family.

"The focus for police at this time is working to establish the circumstances of how he came to be in the river," Mr Van der Zee said.

"Mr Morris was last seen on the 20th of August and was reported missing on the 24th. Efforts are underway to determine his movements between then and when he was found."

The death has been referred to the coroner.
