A man who died in Kaingaroa Forest near Taupo this afternoon was shot, the ambulance service says.
Emergency services were called to the incident in a remote forestry area on a forest road, near Western Boundary Rd, about 1.15pm.
However, due to the remoteness of the area an ambulance didn't arrive until an hour later, St John ambulance spokesman Mark Tregoweth said.
Mr Tregoweth confirmed the man had been shot.
"There was a young man with gunshot wounds."
The man died at the scene.
Mr Tregoweth said any more details would come from police, who were investigating.
Police have confirmed one person had died, but would not be releasing any more details at this stage.
