Woman who couldn't be woken now stable

A woman unable to be woken after an evening nap in remote sand dunes was flown to hospital in a critical condition last night.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter was called to Whatipu, in the Waitakere Ranges on the west coast of Auckland, just before 7pm on Monday, Trust spokeswoman Kerrie Spicer said.

Two women had been on a "long walk" and fell asleep when they stopped to rest, Ms Spicer said.

But one of the women did not wake up.

The woman, in her 50s, was unresponsive in a remote location in the sand dunes north of the car park when the paramedic arrived, Ms Spicer said.

She was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.

A hospital spokesman said the woman was in a stable condition this morning and would be moved to a general ward.
