Teens blasted after arcade roof fall

Police have slammed the 'copy-cat' actions of two boys who fell through a skylight in Timaru on Saturday night - less than 10 days after a boy died after falling from the same spot.

Jordan Logan McKeown (14) was playing with friends on the Caroline Bay Arcade roof when he fell through a skylight about on the evening of November 5.

In the latest incident, a group of teens - three 15-year-olds and one 13-year old - climbed on to the roof to see where Jordan fell from, Senior Sergeant Mark Offen said.

One of the older boys fell through the skylight and badly injured his arm, Sen Sgt Offen said.

The 13-year-old boy jumped through the skylight to help his friend but injured his legs when he landed.

The apparent 'copycat behaviour" was unacceptable, Sen Sgt Offen said.

"This foolish and dangerous behaviour not only tied up emergency resources but also caused unnecessary pain and suffering to the family who lost their son in tragic circumstances on Guy Fawkes night," he said.

Police were working with Timaru District Council to prevent anyone else accessing the roof.

Caroline Bay Association president Heather Woolstencroft told NZME News Service after Jordan's death that she did not know how the boys would have got on the arcade roof.

There was a barrier currently in place but the association would assess the area and make safety recommendations to the council, she said.

"To my knowledge, there's no easy way of getting up there. I don't how they got up there or how he would have fallen.

"There is a barrier, albeit a small one. [The association] will look at the area and make any safety recommendations to council."
