Deportee arrested on arrival in NZ

A New Zealand-born Australian deportee has been arrested upon arrival at Auckland Airport over a historic sex offence against a young girl.

The 29-year-old man, who returned to the country after Australia tightened its laws relating to non-citizen offenders, arrived in New Zealand in the "past few days," Stuff.co.nz reported.

He is accused of sexually assaulting a Hastings girl aged under 12 over a two-year period between 2008 and 2010, it is reported.

The man was remanded in custody for a week after failing to appear in the Hastings District Court yesterday.

It is reported that he was deported to New Zealand from minimum security prison Karnet Prison Farm, south of Perth.

Australia's tougher stance on foreign criminals sees non-citizens who have been sentenced to a year or more in jail, detained and deported.

Another recent deportee, Patrick Sylva, aged in his mid-20s, is wanted by police in New Zealand.

And on Friday, a 25-year-old New Zealander deported from Australia earlier this month was arrested for an alleged burglary in Hamilton.

Three deportees:

*A man appeared in court yesterday on charges relating to the sexual assault of a girl under 12 over a two-year period.

*Another man, Patrick Sylva, is wanted by New Zealand police.

*On Friday, a 25-year-old man was arrested for alleged burglary in Hamilton.
