Near-miss as pram rolls on to train tracks

A baby has been taken to hospital after a near-miss at Auckland's Te Mahia train station in Manurewa.

Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan says the baby was in a double pram which rolled on to the tracks at 8.50am this morning.

He said a train was coming in to stop at the time, but managed to pull up about 20 metres away from the pram.

The baby's father, who had one child out of the pram, jumped on to the tracks and retrieved his other child.

Mr Hannan said the baby was taken to hospital by ambulance. It's not known whether the child was injured

Rail and Maritime Transport Union general secretary Wayne Butson commended the train driver's quick reaction.

"The driver was being extremely vigilant and acted immediately.

"Imagine if the driver was staring out the window, we would be talking about a different outcome."
