Police have named the inmate who died at Otago Correctional Facility on Tuesday.
He was David Joseph Jackson (29).
Prison director Jack Harrison said earlier this week staff found an inmate in an unresponsive state.
Medical attention was provided, but he was pronounced dead.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
In November last year, another inmate, a man in his 30s, died at the prison.
