Humid in North, cooler in South

There's some good weather coming, with conditions set to improve around the country this weekend - but don't put away your umbrella just yet.

MetService meteorologist Chelsea Glue says it will be hot and humid in the North Island.

"There's showers around much of the island today and tomorrow, and a low risk of severe thunderstorms in Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Taupo this afternoon or evening."

The South Island will be cooler, with Sunday the warmer day for most areas.

Dunedin was set to be cloudy today with a few showers and a high of 15 degrees Celsius. Saturday and Sunday would also be cloudy with highs of 16C and 17C, while Monday was forecast to be warmer with 24C.

Nelson was expected to be dry and warm on Monday for its anniversary celebrations.

However, WeatherWatch head forecaster Philip Duncan says heavy showers are possible across the upper North Island tomorrow.

"There may also be a couple of light showers around coastal Canterbury and eastern Marlborough on Saturday - otherwise mainly dry."
