Sky Go fails during cricket again

Sky TV's online service has been hit by at least its second outage within a week, with customers unable to watch the first two hours of the Black Caps game against Australia at Eden Park.

Sky Go services are since back up and running, Sky announced on Twitter.

"SKY Go services are now back up and streaming! Thanks for your patience and we apologise for the interruption."

The Herald has tried to contact the broadcaster's boss John Fellet but was unable to reach him.

A Sky Fan Pass customer said the outage affected him also.

Hauraki resident Max Hetherington purchased a Sky Fan Pass for five days to watch the cricket.

However when settling down at his home to watch the game this afternoon, Sky's online service was down for at least an hour.

"I'm very annoyed.

"You pay for the service and you don't get it," he said.

He said the outages wasn't good for New Zealand cricket and rugby.

"It's derogatory for New Zealand sport.

"They have exclusive rights to cricket and rugby and fans want to see it to support them but they can't."

Mr Hetherington said the sporting bodies should address this issue to Sky TV directly.

He said the service wasn't cheap - costing him about $20 in total for five days.

"I sent them an email and said it was a load of rubbish.

"I haven't got a response yet which is hardly surprising," he said.

While he was able to watch the cricket now with Fan Pass back up and running, he would like some guarantees from Sky that "what we pay is what we get".

Consumer New Zealand chief executive Sue Chetwin said as Sky Go was a free service to subscribers so there wasn't much customers could do.

"However, if I was Sky I would withdraw it until it could get it to work properly, or alternatively give them a Sky Pass."

Customers complained on social media of being unable to access the Sky Go application.
The Herald's attempt to log onto the service also failed.

It is the second time in less than a week that sports fans have been thwarted from watching major events.

Customers also complained on social media on Sunday of being unable to use the Sky Go app - during a time when the Black Caps were playing Pakistan, the rugby Sevens was on in Wellington and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was being screened.

The app allows customers to stream some Sky channels on their phone or tablets when away from their televisions.
