Police are continuing to hunt for a gunman after a lone officer was shot at in Auckland.

Detective Inspector Uraia Vakaruru says police are looking for Patrick Dixon, a 30-year-old Maori, in connection with the 4am shooting in Manurewa yesterday.

A senior police officer escaped injury in the incident, in which a series of shots were fired at his patrol car during a short pursuit.

From late this morning, Opoutere School near Whangamata in the Coromandel was put in lockdown while armed police searched for Mr Dixon.

Police said he was known to visit the area.  The children were being kept inside for their own safety but were in no danger a police spokesman said.

Mr Dixon is described as being Maori, of medium build and 177cm tall. He has a tribal tattoo on his left arm and a tattoo on the left side of his neck.

He is believed to have connections in Counties-Manukau and the Whangamata and Waihi areas.

He already has warrants to arrest for unlawful carriage and possession of a firearm.

Police warn he should not be approached.

Anyone with information should contact Counties Manukau Police on (09) 261 1300 or call 111. Information can also be provided anonymously through CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
