Pursuit crash driver on bail breach charge

The 22 year-old man involved in the crash during a police pursuit which injured a 5-month-old baby yesterday will be released from hospital this morning and will appear in court.

The man will appear in the Auckland District Court on a breach of bail charge but further charges are likely, police said.

A Serious Crash Unit investigation is under way and police anticipate laying further charges once this has been conducted. They said it could take several weeks.

The baby girl remains in a stable condition in hospital.

An Auckland District Health Board spokeswoman this morning said the baby was stable in a ward in Starship Children's Hospital.

Police yesterday said the man was disqualified from driving and was breaching his bail conditions and he was under guard at hospital.

Police could not be immediately contacted this morning.

The baby's mother, who was in the front seat of the car, has been discharged from Auckland City Hospital.
