Man arrested after body found

A Christchurch man killed in an assault last night has been identified.

The body of Simon Prue (41) was found the Heathcote River bank near Ferry Rd late last night.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said a 36-year-old Christchurch man had been arrested and charged.

Police said the man had been charged over a homicide, but did not immediately specify the charge.

"Detectives have worked through the night and will continue the investigation during the weekend to establish the exact circumstances leading up to the assault and death," Det Insp Sweeney said.

"Our condolences go out to the family of Mr Prue, who are being supported by the police and Victim Support."

Det Insp Sweeney said as the matter was now before the courts, no further comment would be made.

He told the New Zealand Herald yesterday officers were speaking to "a person of interest" and wanted to ensure the public that there was no danger to any other members of the community.

Cordons were put up last night between Richardson Tce and Hargood St.

The road was now open again but a section of the river bank remained taped off. Police said this would reopen later today.
