Tree may have killed Fiordland crash victims

Two women who died as a result of a crash in Fiordland on Friday may have been killed by a falling tree.

The Fire Service was called to the scene 80km from Te Anau, along the Te Anau-Milford Highway, about 5.15pm.

A spokesman said reports from the scene were that a tree had fallen on the car and crushed it.

He could not confirm whether the tree fell as a result of impact, or if it was the crash or the falling tree that killed one person, and left the other in a critical condition.

The Fire Service used extraction gear to get the woman in critical condition out of the vehicle but she later died in hospital.
