More heavy rain on way for West Coast

A week after being hit by severe flooding, Franz Josef and other parts of the West Coast are set to get hit by more heavy downpours.

WeatherWatch said there would be bursts of rain and isolated downpours over the West Coast tomorrow morning, and isolated flooding was possible.

Franz Josef was set to get very heavy downpours, WeatherWatch said.

Meanwhile, a severe weather warning has been issued for parts of the North Island, where heavy rain is expected tomorrow.

The MetService has put out the warning for areas including the Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taranaki and Nelson.

A burst of heavy rain is forecast in these areas tomorrow evening through to Saturday morning.

More than 180 people, mostly tourists, were evacuated from Franz Josef last Thursday after the Waiho River burst its banks about 700m north of the man township.

Flooding swept through several hotels including the Scenic Hotel where staff accommodation was under water. The Top 10 Holiday Park campsite on the banks of the Waiho River was swamped by the floodwaters.

WeatherWatch said the risk for flooding was highest tomorrow and into the early hours of Saturday for the West Coast, late tomorrow and Saturday morning for Nelson and overnight tomorrow and Saturday for the north of the North Island.
