Sunny start to school holidays for most

After a wet weekend the sun is set to shine over much of New Zealand today, marking a promising start to the school holidays.

MetService duty forecaster Derek Holland said it was an improving day for most of the country as fine weather spread on to the South Island and covered central New Zealand.

"Things are fining up in the North Island," Mr Holland said.

A few showers could be expected in coastal regions of the South Island and to linger in the east of the North Island but these would eventually clear.

Auckland was forecast to have increasing sunny spells and a high of 21C, while Wellington was cloudy with a few morning showers. Thanks to a brisk southerly wind it would reach just 16C.

There were also a few showers in store for Christchurch this morning before the fine weather kicked in.

From the outset Dunedin would bask in glorious sunshine all day. Both South Island main centres would share a high of 16C.
