Man stabbed, 'severely beaten' in Christchurch

A man was stabbed and "severely beaten" in the garage of his Christchurch home last night.

Police confirmed a man has been charged with aggravated burglary and wounding with intent to injure after an alleged attack.

Officers were called to the property on Briarmont St, Avondale around 11.30pm.

The 47-year-old victim was stabbed in the shoulder once before the attacker fled the scene with some credit cards and personal belongings believed to have been taken from a car.

He was tracked down by a police dog not far from the property and arrested.

The incident is one of two overnight break-ins in Christchurch involving knives, according to Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti.

"We believe there was only one person involved in this attack," Mr Tarawhiti said.

"We don't think they knew each other, the attacker was walking past the address, words were exchanged and then the assault has taken place.

"He was located a short distance from the area by the police dog.

"The victim received quite a bashing around his face and there were cuts to the back of his head.

"We are trying to establish whether or not they are as a result of coming in contact with the knife."

He was charged with aggravated burglary and wounding with intent to injure and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

Another incident involving a knife took place early today in the Riccarton area.

A man chased down a burglar who tried to break into his home around 1.40am.

The burglar was surprised while trying to get inside and fled, but the home owner caught up and held him down until police arrived.

A knife was found on the burglar. He was charged with aggravated burglary, which carries a maximum 14-year jail sentence.
