A climber on Mt Taranaki has been hit by falling rocks.

The police said the climber, in a group of three, was on the southwestern side of the 2518m-tall mountain, according to a Fairfax report.

A search and rescue operation - the third on Mt Taranaki over the long weekend - had started and was still under way at 6.30 this evening.

Yesterday, an English tourist had to be rescued after spending the night on the mountain after she got lost while on a walk. The 34-year-old was airlifted off the mountain and taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by the region's rescue helicopter just before 10am yesterday. She had traversed the summit alone but during her descent the weather deteriorated and she became lost.

On Friday morning, a 41-year-old woman, whose knee was seriously injured in a fall, was carried off Mt Taranaki on a stretcher.
