Warm weather 'not normal' for May

It's an unusually hot start to the month as temperatures soar for some areas across the country.

Temperatures this afternoon rose to 24C in Auckland and Christchurch was sitting on 27C.

WeatherWatch head analyst Philip Duncan said temperatures today were not the norm.

"It's not unusual for a warm day or a mild week or two but not normal for it to be day-after-day ... "

He said the reason for the warmer weather was because of the sub tropical flow helped boost temperatures and humidity and it would continue for another 10 days.

"It's like we're heading towards summer, rather than getting out of it," he said.

Auckland would likely have warm weather until the third week of May.

In the South Island temperatures would be between 18C to 24C, well above average.

"It's not normal weather.

"There's a mixture of hot and warmer to cooler days in the South Island."
