Woman hit by train escapes major injury

A woman hit by a train in the Bay of Plenty today has walked away with minimal injuries.

Emergency services are at the scene near State Highway 2 at Otamarakau, where the woman and the train collided.

A reporter at the scene said the accident was in the middle of a holiday camping ground by the beach, near the local marae, but emergency services confirmed the person was not a camper.

The woman could be seen in the back of a police car calm and collected.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene and could be see leaving.

The reporter said the woman has since left in an ambulance but people in the area were laughing and smiling.

A train could be seen stopped in its tracks about 400m from where the collision happened.

Bay of Plenty police shift commander Inspector Tony Edwards said the collision happened about 10.30am and confirmed police were responding.
