Rain, gales for parts of South Island

Gnarly weather is in store for the South Island today, with thunderstorms and gale-force winds set to lash some regions.

MetService duty forecaster Chelsea Glue said the West Coast of the South Island, which was already experiencing heavy rain, should brace for squally thunderstorms after lunch.

A number of wind warnings and watches have been issued for the South Island ahead of a series of storms.

Eastern regions could expect strong nor'westerly winds to ramp up over the day, with scattered rain forecast for Dunedin and a high of 21degC.

Queenstown and Wanaka could expect rain with wind gusts and a high of 18degC and 20degC, respectively.

It'll also be raining in Invercargill, with a high of 19degC, but strong northerly winds are set to ease.

Strong winds were forecast for a mainly fine Christchurch and a balmy 25degC.

While the North Island escapes with a largely gloomy, dank day,  Wellington could expect the wild weather to ramp up with gale-force winds and heavy rain forecast.

Heavy rain was expected to fall after dark with warnings out for the Tararua Ranges.

The wild weather was expected to affect much of the lower North Island.

While it will be a largely drizzly, grey day for the rest of the island, eastern regions would stay dry.

Auckland could expect a high of 21degC and Wellington  19degC.
