A magnitude 4.7 earthquake has rocked Christchurch this evening.

The "strong" quake, which struck at 8.45pm, was located 10km south-east of the city at a depth of just 7km.

Several people have taken to Facebook to share their shock at the strength of the quake.

"These earthquakes are getting worryingly stronger! I genuinely thought my house was going to fall down on top of me. Get me out of Christchurch," one person wrote.

"Biggest earthquake I've ever felt. Christchurch flying," another person wrote.

A fire service spokeswoman said while it was a "good shake", there were no reports of damages.

A police spokesman also said there were no calls received in regards to the shake.

A St John spokesman said there had been no quake-related emergency calls.

"We encourage people to check on friends and relatives, especially those who are alone, or ill, and who may need support," he said.

One Herald reader said the quake had left her children's nerves "once again shattered".

"If this is earth, what is hell like?"

Linda said the drapes were swinging in her room at the Elms Hotel and there was a low rumbling noise when the quake hit.

Another reader said they were in the bath when the quake struck and had a "small tsunami".

Christchurch resident Leony Miller was sitting on her bed when the earthquake struck.

"Everything moved, it was strong, it was really strong...it felt like a five."

She said the house moved and the windows rattled when the quake.

Mrs Miller said it was a good shake that was a little frightening, but wasn't quite among the strongest she'd felt.

Herald reader Gene McCoy said he was in his hotel room by the airport when the quake struck.

"Coming from California I've felt plenty. I'm down here on work and called my wife to say first time in over 20 years I've felt an earthquake. The bed shaked a bit."

Christchurch resident Laura O'Gorman says it was a decent shake and definitely felt bigger than any of the earthquakes they've had recently.

Another resident, Barbara, told Newstalk ZB she knew the quake was happening when dogs started barking.

"My partner heard the rumble, and the dog must have sensed the rumble. The dogs over the back were barking their heads off, and then it all started to shake."

Hamish McLean, who is in Christchurch on a work trip, said the quake was "an interesting experience".

"Felt like a baby King Kong was shaking the motel," he said.

Robert Manning was on the outskirts of Christchurch in Rolleston when the quake struck.

"Just when we were well and truly at the end of them," he said. "Hope all is well in Christchurch as we are out of town."

Another resident, Richard Warren was in Northwood.

"Heard it coming, two seconds before, first shake louder, then big shaking tailing off, rocking sensation probably fifteen seconds in duration."

Christchurch residents have shared messages about the quake on the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Facebook page.

"Ok that was a nasty little shake folks - hope everyone is," wrote Janelle.

Sarah Willis responded: "Not ok. Knew it was coming. House was vibrating for ages before hand."

Jenny Howard said it was "a bit of a biggie - thoughts to everyone".

Classy Clutter wrote: "Well I didn't have to stir the coffee, Mother Nature did it for me!"

Christchurch was rocked by a 5.7 quake in February - the largest in the city in four years - which hit 15km east of the city at a depth of 15km.

The February tremor sent cliff faces crumbling into the ocean, knocked items off shelves and caused liquefaction to bubble up from the earth. It struck just eight days out from the five-year anniversary of the February 22, 2011 quake which killed 185 people.
