Westport man's disappearance a mystery

Mystery surrounds the disappearance of Westport man Willem van Vuuren, who was reported missing earlier this month.

Police have released few details since they sought help from the public in finding the 54-year-old, who went missing from his Westport home on May 12.

A spokeswoman said today that police had released all the information they had.

"If any further information in relation to Willem's disappearance comes to light, police will be releasing it so we can find him to ensure he is safe and well."

The spokeswoman was unable to say where Mr van Vuuren worked. She said police did not see his job as relevant to the investigation.

It is understood he works at Stockton opencast mine.

Police did not respond to a question asking whether Mr van Vuuren had accessed his bank accounts since he disappeared.

Westport Land Search and Rescue members spent two days helping police search Buller last week, but found nothing.

Anyone who has seen Mr van Vuuren or his car - a silver Mazda Tribute, registration FSC702 - should contact Tasman District Command Centre on 03 546-3895.
