Pensioner in court over sexual assault

A Christchurch pensioner has been charged with sexual assaults half a century apart.

The 65-year-old man appeared in Christchurch District Court today facing 13 charges.

He is accused of three counts of sodomy in Dunedin between June 1964 and December 1970.

The man also faces four charges of sexual connection with a young person aged between 14 and 16 from January 2011 to October 2013, on the West Coast and Christchurch, by giving them money and alcohol in return for sexual acts.

He also faces four charges of committing an indecent act on the young male.

Defence counsel Richard Peters asked for the man to be remanded without plea today on the "serious" charges when he appeared in the dock.

The lawyer's application for interim name suppression was granted by Judge Tom Gilbert until his next court appearance, where he would have to enter pleas to the charges.

Judge Gilbert remanded the man on bail until June 22 on conditions that he live at a Christchurch address, he doesn't associate with the complainants, not to consume or possess alcohol, not to go within 100m of a business address, surrender his passport to police, and not to be with anyone under 16 years of age unless in the company of another adult.
