One person is dead after a crash near the Burnham military camp in Canterbury.
The driver, who was alone, was thrown from the car in the incident, on Two Chain Rd, police said.
The motorist appeared to have lost control after the northbound vehicle came into contact with the soft shoulder of the road.
The vehicle rolled and came to rest on the opposite side of the road.
Police said the scene was being examined by the serious crash unit and the road would remain closed while that was under way.
Meanwhile, a man has critical head injuries after a car crash on State Highway 1, north of Taupo.
He was taken by ambulance to Tokoroa, where he was collected by the Waikato Westpac rescue helicopter and flown to Waikato Hospital.
Another person from the crash was taken by road to Tokoroa Hospital with multiple injuries.
Bad weather prevented the helicopter from flying to the scene.
