Pedestrian killed by train in Auckland

A pedestrian is dead after being struck by a train at the Glen Innes train station in Auckland this morning.

Police confirmed a person was hit at about 7am. The pedestrian, whose age and gender have not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman told the Herald she was standing on the platform when the incident happened.

As the train approached the railway crossing, they heard a horn beep twice before the driver pulled the brakes.

"There was a pedestrian walking across the rails as the lights were on. [The train driver] beeped and tried to stop. Our train is sitting on the crossing right now."

The woman said although she could not clearly see the pedestrian at the time, she confirmed that the crossing's warning lights and bells were ringing.

Emergency services arrived quickly.

Officers escorted passengers off the train and on to the platform, and commuters were asked to find alternative transport as the scene was cordoned off.

The incident has led to delays on the Eastern Line.

Auckland Transport informed commuters via its social media pages that all trains running between Manukau and Panmure were on a reduced frequency.

One of the two rail lines into the Auckland CBD is now open, police said.
