Suspicious fire at Nelson funeral home

A garage housing hearses at a Nelson funeral home has been extensively damaged in a suspicious blaze overnight.

Fire Service southern shift manager Andrew Norris said the large building which contained a number of vehicles belonging to Marsden House Funeral Services were destroyed in the fire which broke out just before midnight.

The fire sparked a third alarm with 28 firefighters and a command unit at the scene to quell the blaze.

While the garage at the rear of the Sussex St property could not be saved the main administration building was spared from damage.

It was not known how many work vehicles were destroyed in the large 10x20 m building.

Mr Norris said the fire was being treated as suspicious with a fire safety officer and police returning to the scene this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.
