Snowfall warning for Desert Road

A snowfall warning has been issued for the Desert Road.

Up to 2cm of snow is expected to accumulate on Thursday afternoon above 900m, MetService said.

The snow is expected between noon and 6pm tomorrow.

The WeatherWatch website is forecasting more "sub-tropical" rain in the first half of July.

Two more lows are expected in the first 10 days of the month, bringing heavy rain.

The first low, due to hit the upper North Island this Sunday, will bring "isolated heavy downpours" and warm winds.

Another low, expected on July 9, is likely to affect the whole country.

A colder southerly flow may affect New Zealand around July 7-8 and again in the middle of the month, but these are likely to be short-lived.
