Fires damage North Island homes

Two homes in the upper North Island were damaged by fire overnight.

Northern Fire Service shift manager Megan Ruru said crews were called to a blaze at Te Kopuru, south of Dargaville, just after 11pm. A house on Signal Station Rd was well ablaze when firefighters arrived.

There was no one in the house, she said.

A second home was also engulfed by fire in Riverhead, northwest of Auckland, just before 11pm.

Ms Ruru said the house in Applemoors Way was well ablaze when fire crews arrived.

Everyone inside the home had escaped the fire.

Fire safety officers would continue investigations today.
