The search for a Wellington woman missing for four nights resumed this morning.

Mary Berrington, 62, has not been seen or heard from since Tuesday night when a family member spoke to her at her home in Upper Hutt about 9pm.

Police will today scour properties and scope out the Hutt River as the search enters a fourth day.

There are grave concerns for Berrington's safety and police say she has gone into a "hiding from the outside world" mindset in the past.

Berrington has mental impairment and may not be in a position to help herself, police said. She may also have stopped taking her medication.

Police said she was believed to be wearing a dark polar fleece jacket and dark leggings.

Search and rescue teams will today undertake an intensive search of properties and out-buildings in the immediate vicinity of Berrington's Upper Hutt home.

Police said the searchers would be easily identifiable by their uniforms and would introduce themselves to people on properties when they arrived.

Sergeant Anthony Harmer said people who live in and around Fergusson Drive should expect to see search and rescue teams in the area and shouldn't be surprised to see them on private property.

"Our search teams will make themselves known to home owners when they arrive at a property.

"The teams will be searching gardens and bush areas of properties and any out-buildings such as sheds or garages."

The police dive squad will also be assessing the Hutt River from the Totara Park overbridge south.

• Anyone who has seen Mary is asked to call police on (04) 527 2300 or call 111 immediately.
