'Go Green, Go Vegan' - near-naked protester

A near-naked woman covered in green body paint protested outside an Auckland butcher shop today.

Holding a sign that read, "Go Green. Go Vegan" outside Neat Meat in Parnell, the protester wanted to remind people that, according to the Environment Ministry, agriculture is responsible for producing 48% of New Zealand's greenhouse-gas emissions.

Two-thirds of the emissions are methane produced by cows and sheep.

"Climate change, water pollution, resource depletion, species extinction, deforestation, and land erosion are all linked to the consumption of meat and dairy foods", said Claire Fryer, a campaign coordinator for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

"Peta's message is that environmental issues can be tackled at the root three times a day by eating eco-friendly vegan meals."

Per capita, New Zealand has the highest methane emissions in the world, at 600kg per person, compared to a global average of 100kg.
