Man rescued after hang-glider accident

A 40-year-old man has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after crashing in a hang-glider west of Auckland this afternoon.

Emergency services found the hang-glider precariously perched up half way up a cliff face at Whites Beach, about 2km north of Piha on the west coast, Senior Sergeant Anthony Miller said.

The pilot was able to free himself from the wreckage and climb to the bottom of the cliff, where the police eagle helicopter picked him up.

He was taken to Waitakere Hospital with minor injuries.

The hang-glider wreckage would remain on the cliff until morning, Mr Miller said.
