Windy start predicted for spring

Spring is nearly here but the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) says it'll be a windy, dry one.

Niwa climate variability and change principal scientist Dr James Renwick said an El Nino weather pattern was expected to result in more frequent south-westerly winds nationwide.

Temperatures for the next three months were expected to be average except for the north and east of the North Island, where they could be below average.

Rainfall was likely to be in the near normal or below normal ranges in all regions.
