Porirua City Council has won the top local government award
for its work with communities.
The council was selected for the supreme award from 44
entries in the 12th annual New Zealand Post Local Government
Excellence Awards, held in Palmerston North on Saturday.
Its "Villages Planning Programme" gets communities to develop
a vision for their own neighbourhood, then work with the
council to make it happen.
Eight communities had taken part so far, with ideas ranging
from a new waterfront promenade and skate park to a community
fair.
The council won $5000.
A panel of judges selected the supreme award winner from four
category winners, who each won $2000.
Porirua won the council/community relationships category.
Manukau City Council won the building organisational
capability category with a project aimed at helping the
council manage its $6 million funds.
New Plymouth District Council won the joined up local
government category with its strategy aimed at helping the
council work with the community to reduce alcohol-related
harm in the district.
North Shore City Council won the improved local regulation
category award with its new reduced red tape approach to
monitoring the management of erosion and sediment control on
small development sites.
The judging panel was comprised of local government and
business personalities.
