Two men have admitted the slaughter of more than 30 birds at
a South Canterbury aviary.
Jonathan Ramon Douglas Fleming, 22, and Simiona Paul John,27,
pleaded guilty in Timaru District Court today to charges of
breaking into the Temuka Aviary and wilfully ill-treating the
birds, causing them to die.
A third accused, Luke Michael Kircaldie, 21, has not yet
entered a plea.
Many of the parrots, galahs and other exotic birds at the
Temuka Bird Zoo had their heads ripped off in the attack last
month.
A group of bird lovers who gathered outside the Timaru
District Court for the trio's appearance.
"We stood outside and let them know that they were scumbags
and mongrels," Timaru Bird Club secretary Lynette Carson
said.
The two men will reappear in court for sentencing in October.
