A woman used a stick on her nine-year-old grandson when he
refused to complete chores leaving extensive bruising, a
court was told today.
Matekino Morgan, 54, pleaded guilty in Christchurch District
Court to assault with a blunt instrument.
She told police she hit the boy, who had been in her care
since 2003, because he did not complete his chores properly
and that she did not regret it because he was "a handful".
Police prosecutor Anselm Williams told Judge Brian Callaghan
the boy was left with bruising on his arms, legs, and bottom,
some of which was extensive.
Judge Callaghan remanded Morgan on bail to May 3 and ordered
a pre-sentence report to cover her suitability for home or
community detention, and a victim impact report.
