Changes to the student loan scheme brought a feeling of
relief to University of Otago economics and politics student
Kaitlen O'Connor (20) yesterday.
After being nervous about the potential for interest going
back on loans, she was pleased they remained interest-free
and said other changes were "logical".
People aged over 55 and those who only studied part-time, who
would have their access to the loan scheme restricted,
generally had assets and were better equipped to earn money
while studying, she said.
As for the reduction in the repayment holiday, from three
years to one, Miss O'Connor believed that was also fair.
She predicted having a $45,000 loan, after five years of
study, and it would be "selfish of me to go overseas and not
worry about my debt".
The introduction of an extra 40 places in medical schools was
also welcomed as medical students worked hard to obtain
places in training programmes.
As a part-time worker, earning about $60 a week, she was
"happy" with changes to KiwiSaver as the increase was minimal
for her.
"I think the Budget is what we needed, because otherwise the
debt will have to be dealt with by the next generation."
