No change to MMP before election: Collins

Justice Minister Judith Collins has confirmed there will be no changes to the MMP system before the 2014 election.

Ms Collins was asked in Parliament today whether she intended to introduce the changes recommended by the Electoral Commission before the 2014 election. She said she would not because such changes required consensus and there was no consensus among the political parties consulted.

The Electoral Commission had recommended scrapping the provision that allows MPs who win electorate seats to bring others in on their party's list even if they did not reach the 5 per cent threshold. It also recommended lowering that threshold to 4 or 3 per cent to compensate for any loss of proportionality from that.
