Two political polls had different results tonight with one showing clear support for the National Party, while the other showed National would need coalition partners in order to govern.

The TVNZ/Colmar Brunton poll has National able to rule with a majority if an election was held today, while the 3 News poll found National would still need coalition partners.

The TVNZ poll found National jumped six points to 49, Labour dropped three points to 33, and the Greens fell by two to nine per cent support.

The latest figures showed National would have a clear majority with 62 seats.

If Labour, the Greens, and Mana Party formed a coalition, that would only equate to 55 seats - so long as all electorate seats were held.

The poll surveyed 1000 voters and had a margin of error of + or - 3.1 per cent.

However, the 3 News poll showed support for National dropping to 47 per cent, down two per cent, Labour increasing support by nearly three per cent to 33 and the Greens slightly up on 12 per cent.

The 3 News figures meant National would win 59 seats so would need the support of Act and United Future, each with one seat, to gain a majority in Parliament.

The Maori Party's three seats would push that margin to 64 seats.

Seats for Labour, the Greens and Mana added to just 57 seats in Parliament.

Fifty-four per cent of respondents to the 3 News poll supported the Labour/Greens policy to reform the electricity market, while 39 per cent were against it and seven per cent did not know. There was 29 per cent support among National Party supporters.

Both polls had John Key keeping a hold of preferred Prime Minister, with the TVNZ poll listing him at 42 per cent ahead of David Shearer on 12 per cent; while the 3 News poll had Mr Key on nearly 41 per cent, ahead of Mr Shearer on 10.5 per cent.
