National MP Tau Henare has announced he will retire at the upcoming general election.

He made the announcement over Twitter this morning, saying he was on his way "to caucus to inform my colleagues of the @NZNationalParty that I intend to retire at the upcoming General Election".

He continued: "It's been a pleasure and a privilege and a very humbling experience. Thanks heaps folks.

"Best friends and comrades have been wife and kids."

Mr Henare will step down from politics 15 years after he won the Northern Maori seat for New Zealand First. He also served as Maori Affairs Minister in the first MMP government.

He lost his seat in the 1999 election but returned to Parliament as a National list MP in 2005
