Labour elects new president

The Labour Party has elected economist Nigel Haworth as its new president.

Professor Haworth replaces Moira Coatsworth, who stood down in December following Labour's election defeat.

In a statement, he said it was a privilege to take on the role at a time of growing party membership and renewed energy.

"I'm looking forward to working with members across the party to build a successful 2017 campaign," he said.

Prof Haworth heads the management and international business department at the University of Auckland and specialises in international labour movements.

He was elected to Labour's policy council in 2012 and became a member of the New Zealand Labour Party Council in 2013.
